Signature Build’s Locations

Throughout Signature Build’s refurbishment work the team have become attuned to the architectural styles, materials, and historical housing trends in London, the Home Counties, and the Cotswolds.

The areas where we work reveal a rich tapestry of history and culture. Each region has its own unique characteristics, reflecting the different periods and influences that have shaped their development. From the grandeur of Georgian and Victorian buildings in London to the charming Tudor and Elizabethan houses in the Home Counties, and the picturesque stone cottages of the Cotswolds, the diversity is remarkable. This insight article takes a closer look at these elements, providing information on the predominant building styles, common materials, and historical trends that define these regions.

Retrofitting these substantial older homes is a key component of Signature Build’s refurbishment work – updating insulation, windows, and heating systems, older buildings can achieve modern energy standards. This is particularly important in historic areas where preserving the architectural integrity is crucial. Efforts like these not only make homes more sustainable but also help in conserving cultural heritage.

London

London’s architecture is rich with Georgian and Victorian influences. These styles are evident in the city’s grand townhouses and terraced homes. Georgian buildings, known for their symmetry and classic proportions, often feature brick facades and sash windows. Victorian architecture, on the other hand, is more ornate, with decorative trims and bay windows. In the suburbs, you can also find many arts and crafts houses, which add a unique character to the city’s architectural landscape.

In London, brick and stucco are the most common building materials. The city’s architecture often features the iconic ‘London brick’, in production since 1877, both durable and aesthetically pleasing. Stucco is frequently used to cover brickwork, providing a smooth and elegant finish. These materials became popular due to England’s scarcity of wood to meet high demand.

London is famous for its terraced houses and townhouses. These homes are often found in long rows, sharing side walls with their neighbours. They are typically narrow but extend in depth, making efficient use of limited urban space. Many of these homes date back to the Georgian and Victorian eras, featuring elegant facades and intricate architectural details. Signature Build have experience working on refurbishing London’s grand houses in this style with elegant stucco facades and luxurious spacious family homes within.

Home Counties

The Home Counties boast a wealth of Tudor and Elizabethan architecture. These styles are characterized by their timber-framed structures and steeply pitched roofs. Many homes from this period also feature large, ornate chimneys and leaded glass windows. The use of timber and thatch was common, giving these buildings a distinct, rustic charm.

Signature Build recognizes this area’s older buildings are known for their traditional use of timber and thatch. Timber frames are a hallmark of Tudor and Elizabethan homes, while thatched roofs add a rustic charm. These materials were readily available in the past, making them a practical choice for local builders.

In the Home Counties, detached and semi-detached homes are more common. These houses offer more space and privacy compared to the city’s terraced houses. Detached homes with gardens continue to be popular among families seeking a quieter, more suburban lifestyle and Signature Build have expertise in the frequent requirement for them to be improved with thoughtful refurbishment to modernize and add space.

Cotswolds

In the Cotswolds, the predominant building style is the stone cottage, often with a chocolate-box thatched roof or the recognizable stone-slate roof. These cottages are typically built from the local quarried limestone, which gives them a distinctive warm, honey-colored appearance. The region is also home to grand manor houses, which showcase the same stone construction but on a larger, more elaborate scale. The antiquity and quaintness of these buildings add to the picturesque quality of the Cotswold landscape.

The Cotswolds are also known for charming farmhouses and its barn conversions, where the traditional exterior is maintained and the interior beautifully modernized. Farmhouses are usually large, with thick stone walls and thatched roofs. Barn conversions, on the other hand, transform old agricultural buildings into stylish, modern homes while retaining their rustic charm.  The rise of remote work has increased demand for homes with office spaces, often making converted agricultural buildings ideal.
